Wheeeeeew~! This was a long one! Aroundabouts when I hit World [13-X] and started having characters ask "hey what have you been doing" I figured we'd need to do a recap thing. Except, somehow it never seemed right to do it over in that World. There was a lot of stuff happening and a lot of threads that were going around - between everything Két had been dealing with up until that point to all the friends and family and whatnot that she was busy seeing. Not to mention the only particularly important 'page' around then was 400, which was relegated to The Benefactor's formal introduction. All in all, it just didn't feel like the right time to pull this sort of stunt.
Then I reached World in my script, looked at the page number, and went, "Well, I guess now's as good a time as any to do this" and so I made a note in my script to do a recap comic and then just kept scripting pages after it. At the time I had no idea how long the damn thing was going to be. I figured I'd do one or two panels per World, maybe even three panels depending on World length, and that would be that. But I underestimated how many Worlds we'd checked out. I guess, despite that it's been four years now (quite literally - our fourth anniversary was yesterday!), it all seemed a lot shorter? Time sure flies when you do what you love. We've been through a lot, we've done a lot of things, and a lot of stuff has happened, both in and out of the story.
Aware The Abridged Series was a nice chance to go back and look at everything that brought us up to this point. Refresh myself on threads I might have forgotten I left for myself to pick up, lampshade certain developments from early in the comic that resulted in certain things happening the way they did, explain a few minor details that somehow got left out of the story here and there, and all in all make fun of myself while simultaneously recreating panels from the comic's run.
Yeah. That's right. Every single panel in this update (aside from the first two and the last two) was a recreation of panels from other pages in the comic. I'd link 'em myself but, part of the fun is for you guys to go through and see if you can figure out which ones were which! I decided it'd be more fun to take the hard path and recreate the panels instead of just copy-pasting them as a sort of way of seeing how much I'd grown as a comic-maker through this comic's run. Admittedly, there were a few panels I was rather lazy with, but that was either because I'd misplaced the resources for them, they weren't mine to begin with (see: the Dark Age of Mobius panel), or they'd been made recently enough that I didn't feel there was anything I could change/improve upon/etc. Dialogue was also changed (of course) but for the most part, the people who were speaking remained the same - and the base emotions were kept the same as well. It was a fun little challenge to figure out what people might be saying in those panels that still made sense given the context of this update.
It was a lot of fun - and a lot of work - but in the end, I'm glad that I went this route. Even if I was basically screaming the entire time I was working on it. To everyone in Discord who had to put up with me complaining about this - eeer, sorry about that!
Happy 450, everyone! Here's to more adventures across the multiverse.
